In this blog I will talk about why I prefer
boots such as the Ariat Two24 Highlands boots (above) over sneakers like Vans
or Nikes.
Why boots instead of modern
shoes like Vans or Nikes? Most modern-day shoes use mostly synthetic materials that
are good for immediate comfort but bad for longevity. Every few months you
have to buy a new pair and throw the old shoes away. This causes lots
of waste: according to the U.S. Department of the Interior, at least 300
million pairs of shoes are thrown away each year in the U.S. alone, which can take
30 - 40 years to decompose. One way to minimize this waste is to buy a pair of
shoes that can be resoled and use high-end material that take longer to wear
and form to the shape of your foot. Some good options are brands like Redwing,
Thursday boot Co., Nicks, and Ariat.
To learn more about the material used in boots and shoes I would recommend YouTube channels like Rose Anvil or Trenton & Heath. For instance, Rose Anvil cuts shoes in half and talks about the materials used and the benefits and disadvantages of the construction and material used.
Trenton & Heath talk about similar topics but focus on how to repair and get your shoes to last longer.
